How many stitches after dental implant?

Why do all dental implant surgeries require stitches?

In some dental implant surgeries, sutures are not necessary, but in most cases they are required. Surgical sutures approximate the gum edges and close the implant site. This reduces the risk of complications such as infection, bleeding, and the accumulation of food debris. If additional procedures are required (a bone graft or membrane placement), the sutures stabilise these structures. For this reason, if the wound is not sutured after a dental implant, the surgical site can open, which delays healing or causes the implant to fail.

How many stitches are usually placed after a dental implant?

The number of stitches depends on the incision size, the number of implants, and additional procedures. For this reason, the numbers we will mention here are general and are written to create an idea. Single dental implants require 1-3 stitches per implant. After Antalya All-on-4 dental implant surgery, a longer incision is required. Therefore, 6-10 stitches are usually required. For All-on-6 dental implants, 8-12 stitches are required because it has a larger surgical area. The number increases if additional grafting is performed.

In summary, the number of stitches after dental implant surgery rises as the length of the incision increases.

What type of stitches are used after dental implants?

There are two main types of stitches: resorbable sutures and non-resorbable sutures. With advances in modern healthcare, non-resorbable sutures are not used in implant surgeries. After receiving your dental treatment in Turkey, the stitches dissolve within 7 days on average. In this way, you do not need to wait to have your stitches removed after having your dental implant in Antalya. Sometimes, for very complex dental surgeries, dentists may prefer non-resorbable sutures for better stability and wound closure. They will also share this situation with you.

Does getting stitches removed hurt?

Your stitches will dissolve on their own in 7-14 days. In this way, you will get rid of your stitches without feeling any hurt.

How long do stitches stay in after dental implant surgery?

Do not apply pressure on the operation area. Eat soft and liquid foods. Do not use a toothbrush for the first few days, then use a soft brush. Do not try to remove your stitches yourself.

Can you have Turkey  dental implants stitches without pain or swelling?

After the dental implant, you will not feel any pain or soreness when suturing. This is because your surgery is performed under local anaesthesia. After your surgery is over, you will start to feel toothache after the anaesthesia wears off. For this reason, your dentist will recommend you painkillers. It is quite natural to feel pain and swelling in the first few days after the operation. After the 3rd day, the pain and swelling decrease and the initial healing process is completed within a week or two.

When to contact your dentist about stitches after an implant?

If your tooth mesh and tooth swelling continue to increase more than 3 days after your surgery, if there is an opening in the suture line, if your implant screw has moved, or if you see signs of infection, you should contact your dentist without delay.

Can stitches affect speech?

After dental implant surgery, the stitches do not prevent you from speaking or eating, but they do cause slight discomfort at first. You will feel tightness at the site of the surgery. Your speech is usually unaffected, but if the incision is close to the front teeth, you may notice a slight change in pronunciation until the swelling goes down. As the healing progresses and the stitches dissolve, your speech will return to normal.
